Bubba Watson's drive hits the head of his fan during the Zurich Classic of New Orleans - Golf News
Radd Leonard had to pay the price of being Bubba Watson’s fan when he was struck by a ball that Watson drove in the second round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, on Friday, April 27, 2012.
However, the fan expressed his pleasure over being the victim of a player whom he came to watch on the course.
The incident happened when Watson made a tee shot on the second hole at TPC Louisiana.
The 52-year-old motorcycle shop owner from Baton Rouge explained that he saw the ball coming towards him. However, he was not sure if it would come exactly towards his head.
When the ball came close him, he tried to duck down. However, it was too late and the ball struck the back of his head, making it bleed. He was then quickly approached by the medics on the course.
“I saw it coming and it looked like it was hooking right at me. I wanted to see that big hook, you know, and I got to see it. I turned and ducked and it still hit me,” Leonard said. “It gave him a good bounce, anyway”.
He was then advised to visit the first aid centre to which he refused and preferred to stay on the course and watch his favourite player display his skills live in front of him.
“I’ll be all right,” Leonard said. “As long as I didn’t black out, I figured everything was OK”.
Later on, he was given with a red Zurich Classic golf shirt to wear because his own shirt was spoiled due to the blood spots.
Watson also walked to him to shake hands and then gave him the glove he was wearing, after signing it.
The only good thing about the incident was that the ball bounced back to the fairway after hitting the fan.
“We’re glad you’re all right, but if you could just angle your head a little differently ...,” Watson’s caddie Ted Scott humorously said.
Thereafter, Watson continued his game and carded a one-under par 71 to make the cut at two-under par two-round score.
