Bubba Watson: A new superstar in golf? – Golf Feature
For the eighth time in a row, the major championships have witnessed new faces appearing on top of the leaderboard to take the first major victories of their careers. This year, it was United States’ Bubba Watson.
Watson never took a golfing lesson early in his life. In fact, he is among the few naturally-talented golfers who grace the game of golf.
When he entered the world of golf, he himself was unable to control the talent he had in him and he had always been misunderstood by many.
Despite his recent good form and the talent he has, Watson was not the expected winner of the Masters, this year.
He himself was not expecting such a great achievement coming his way this year. He himself admitted that he never dreamt of winning a major at the Augusta National.
That is the reason that caused him to say, “I can't really say it's a dream come true” because he never had one.
This also marked his fourth PGA Tour victory since his first win came in the 2010 Travelers Championship.
In 2010, he lost to Martin Kaymer in the three-hole playoff of the PGA Championship. No one thought that a goofy kid would register a major win after 19 months.
Phil Mickelson, who has always admired Watson’s game, also criticised the way people think of the left handed player from Bagdad, Florida.
“I also don’t care about the casual viewer because they aren’t able to truly appreciate Watson for what sets him apart from his peers.  To them, he’s just another guy who hits it exceptionally long”.
“To a golfer, he’s a Picasso or a Stravinsky, a figure at once at the forefront of current movements while paying tribute to the greats of previous generations.  Bubba is at once the epitome of today’s young golf bomber yet works the ball like no other in
this era of high-straight ball flights,” he added.
Right after he registered a win at the Augusta National, a new debate started, focusing on the question of whether he will become a new superstar in the game of golf.
The reality is that it is too soon to mark him as a future golf star. He has, no doubt, the required skills and abilities to outshine his opponents on the course. Yet, he needs to prove his mettle with some more wins in other events too.
Winning a major has always been considered a great achievement in one’s life. Yet, it needs to be justified with some consistent performances over a stretched period of time.
There are many players such as Ben Curtis, Shaun Micheel, Rich Beem, Mike Weir and many more who won few events on the PGA Tour, including maiden major title wins.
Later, they lost their momentum and went out of the golf scene for many years and never returned to their forms.
Similarly, Watson has only won a single major title so far in his career, along with three other PGA Tour wins. He definitely has the opportunities in front of him and his skills of the game can turn most of the factors in his favour.
Yet, he has a long way ahead of him and his future game will speak of his success or failure in the world of golf.
