Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson thrash the International Team yet again in President’s Cup
Long-hitting Bubba Watson and the rising American star Webb Simpson, continued with their rampage on the second day of the President’s Cup again thrashing the International Team of Ernie Els and Ryo Ishikawa at the Four-Ball session here at the Royal Melbourne
Golf Club.
The duo won the second hole right at the start of the event but lost the lead when Simpson fell in for a bogey at the fourth, giving a chance to the International Team to level the score. The American Team never trailed the International Team after that
with Watson carding a birdie on the sixth and the team won the seventh when both Els and Ishikawa dropped their shots.
Watson and Simpson went over with their aggressive putting wining three more holes in the round, while Els and Ishikawa pulled in two holes in the rest of the round. Els was disappointed with his performances and attributed the American Team’s success to
the newly gained confidence from the first round.
“I think it was a good draw for them,” Els said. “They had beat us yesterday so they had a bit of confidence playing us. We needed to be special today, and just weren’t. You know, it’s a tough day. I know it’s tough for everybody, but just couldn’t quite
get the ball close to the hole. We didn’t make enough birdies.”
Earlier, International Team Captain Greg Norman revealed that Els and Ishikawa both wanted to stay together on the second day despite of their loss in the opening round. Greg also said that he gave Els other options to switch over but he insisted to play
with Ishikawa.
“He wanted to play with him again,” Norman said referring to Els’ decision to maintain the status quo. “We gave him other options. At the end of the day, he had no problem, he’s completely comfortable with him.”
Ishikawa scored three birdies in all while Els had a better day as compared to the opening day at the Foursomes and carded four birdies at the windswept Royal Melbourne. The American Team is now leading the event by 7-5, through the halfway mark. The event
will now move on to the third day with another round of Foursomes.
