Bubba Watson back in form with a 66 in Zurich Classic of New Orleans – Golf news
Bubba Watson managed a score of 6-under par, 66 in the first round of PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans to surge into early lead alongside Matt Jones.
The $6.4-million event with a winner share of $1.116 million is taking place at the Tournament Players Club Louisiana in Avondale.
The longest hitter of 2010, Watson stepped on the front-nine in cloudy conditions and used the wind to fulfil his motives. He missed the fairway at the first tee after he drove the ball onto the left side which eventually resulted in a bogey. Moving towards
the next tee, the American hit a perfect shot over the fairway with a 3-wood and walked across three yards to hammer a 5-iron onto the green. The ball stopped two feet from the hole and Watson putted it in for the first birdie of the day.
With a par-3 second as the next challenge, Watson pulled out a hybrid and fade a shot to hit the green in regulation.
On his way to the closing hole of the front-nine, Watson had conquered two more holes and had a score of 3-under par 33. On the back-nine, Watson aced the par-5 11th after two-putting it from 32 feet. He caught two more birdies against a bogey
and wrapped the day as the leader alongside the Aussie Jones.
Watson termed his mother as the motivation behind his score. He said, “My mom really wanted me to come. My mom always comes to this golf tournament, so when my mom says she wants to come I am here. And somehow I shot 6 under today.”
When asked what he felt about the course and his game, he said, “The way the course is, it just doesn't fit my eye the way it is. For me, it's just not one that I want to play every day. Today, it just worked out. I've been hitting it good all year, but
I made some putts and hit some good iron shots and somehow came out 6 under.”
