Bubba Watson falters at a crucial stage
Just when Bubba Watson needed a commanding performance, the Masters champion faltered. Watson could only come up with an even par round of 71, on Wednesday, to finish the PGA Grand Slam of Golf on a low.
It was a disappointing end for Watson. He started off brilliantly in the first round, carding a three-under 68 on Tuesday.
At the start of the day, he was only two shots behind the overnight leader and the eventual champion, Padraig Harrington. However, he could not keep up with the pace and made quite a few errors.
Four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey are just not good enough when you are playing in a four-man elite level tournament.
Watson had a decent front nine. He was two-under for the first nine holes. He also birdied the 10th but a bogey and a double bogey on the 15th and the 16th hole, respectively, did the major damage.
Watson had a wonderful year overall. He won the Masters this year and registered two very good second place finishes.
Above all, he absolutely dazzled everybody with his breath taking shots. Currently, the world number seven, Watson is destined to climb up the rankings, considering the talent that he possesses.
"You know, it was just a good day," said Watson. "Just got some loose swings trying to create some stuff when Pádraig was playing so well. Stuck in the tree and chose the wrong club on 16. Made a quick double there and I was out of it".
His double bogey on the sixteenth really did the damage for him. As a result, he had to finish for a T3.
PGA Grand Slam of Golf is not an official tour event. Therefore, performance here does not matter that much. Nevertheless, it is still nice to play some good golf, especially shooting a flawless round.
Watson is not known for such performances. Generally, he is very good in the crucial stages but for some reason, he could not come up with the goods.
May be, he was just trying to overdo a little but this was definitely not the result that he wanted.
