Bubba Watson finishes tied second at the Thailand Golf Championship
The reigning Masters champion Bubba Watson fired a seven-under par 65 on Sunday, to finish tied for the second position, at the second edition of the Thailand Golf Championship.
The US$1 million event, which was sanctioned by the Asian Tour, was being staged at the Amata Spring Country Club, featuring top-notch players from different parts of the world.
Entering the final round, Watson was holding the seventh position on the leaderboard, 11-strokes behind the leader Charl Schwartzel.
He then made a strong charge on the leaderboard, by carding birdies on the fourth, sixth seventh and the eighth hole.
The back nine of the course also witnessed him play some decent shots, earning him another three birdies on the 11th, 12th and the 16th hole.
At the end of the day, he found himself sharing the second position with Thitiphun Chuayprakong of Thailand.
In the meantime, Schwartzel also maintained consistency in his game and added a 65 to his scorecard to record an 11-stroke victory in the second-last tournament of the 2012 Asian Tour season.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, Watson said that he played poorly in the second and the third round.
According to the American, it became really difficult for him to chase Schwartzel on top of the leaderboard, after having a deficit of 11 strokes, entering the final round.
“I didn’t have my best stuff on Friday and Saturday. I made a lot of mistakes. Schwartzel played pretty good and my best stuff probably wouldn’t be as good. It would have given me a chance to scare him but I didn’t have my best in the previous two days.
I had no bogeys and no mistakes and somehow it came out to a seven-under,” he said.
He also said that he enjoyed his experience of visiting the Amata Spring Country Club, for the first time in his career.
“It has been great. This is my first time in Thailand. It was pretty hot so it was different. The golf course is great. This is a championship golf course at its best,” said the Bagdad, Florida resident.
