Bubba Watson leads at Wells Fargo Championship - Golf News
Bubba Watson has occupied the top most section of the leader board with his long hits in the Wells Fargo Championship, at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. The tournament is the last stop on the Professional Golf Association tour before
the Players Championship starts.
The longest hitter on the PGA Tour teed off from the back and drove a tee-shot to three yards of the fairway. The ball landed on a perfect spot, which was left to the fairway bunker and one yard away from the green. Utilising the mid iron, the player
carved a shot onto the right side and hit the green in regulation to pick the first birdie of the day. He marched towards the next hole and par-equalled after missing the birdie putt.
Watson promoted to the number one sport in the PGA Tour’s Fed-Ex Cup Points standings this week, after his play-off victory at the 2011 Zurich Classic of New Orleans last Sunday.
Watson was joined by his fellow compatriot, Jonathan Byrd. Unlike Watson, the American teed off from the front and carded a birdie after hitting the par-3 second hole in regulation.
Padraig Harrington, who is the 32nd seed in the world kicked-off from the back and drove the tee shot towards the centre of the fairway, which left him standing at an ideal location from where he hit the green in regulation.
The Dubliner walked towards the next hole and left it at par after missing the green.
Stuart Appleby, who scored 59 in the 2010 Greenbrier Classic, chose to tee off from the back and birdied the opening hole to make his presence felt on the course. The Aussie who is ranked in the top 75 players of the world had been facing some problem
in the season start regarding his long game, but now he seems to have overcome it.
Meanwhile, the defending champion, Rory McIlroy is 1-over par after the first three holes. The rookie dropped a shot on the par-5 tenth and par-equalled the next two to occupy the 27th place of the leader board.
