Bubba Watson off to a sloppy start in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans - Golf News
Bubba Watson got off to a sluggish start in title defence at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in the opening round at the TPC Louisiana on Thursday, April 26, 2012.
Watson entered the tournament with high morale and confidence because of his recent victory in the Masters Tournament.
However, his opening-round performance was not as good as it was expected. He suffered a bogey on the very first hole that he played.
He carded a total of four birdies against three bogeys for a one-under par 71 score to finish tied for the 49th position, six strokes behind the leaders, Ken Duke and Cameron Tringale.
According to Watson, he was feeling a little exhausted because of the tight schedule he has had in the last two month.
He even showed his weariness after the Zurich Classic Pro-Am, held before the formal start of the event. Therefore, he was not able to focus on his game and made several mistakes while making the putts.
“You know, funny story is that I played awful yesterday,” he said. “My body is not where it wants to be. You know, I can't hit shots that I want to hit. I can't hit it and make putts. I'm struggling out there. Just exhausted. Mentally exhausted”.
Watson believes that making the cut will be enough for him this week, as he is not in a position to contend for the top position on the leaderboard.
“Made a quick bogey on 8, my 17th hole,” he said. “Just loss of focus there with a short missed putt. So, under par -- my good week this week will be making the cut and that's what me and my caddie joked about all day. I'm just exhausted. Hitting the ball
full bore tires me out”.
On the other hand, the world number two Luke Donald once again faltered, as he carded a one-over par 73 on Thursday.
Donald mixed four birdies with three bogeys and a double bogey that came on the par-three 17th hole.
Ben Curtis, the winner of last week’s Valero Texas Open, was again impressive and managed to register a score of five-under par 67 to share the seventh spot on the leaderboard.
