Bubba Watson plays Royal Lytham for the first time, says accuracy will be the key for success
The reigning Masters champion Bubba Watson reached the venue of the British Open and played a practice round on Monday, his first ever on the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club.
According to Watson, he will have to completely change his style of game while heading towards the third major event of the year. He said all that while keeping the 200 bunkers in mind that are placed on the Lancashire links course.
He stated the he will have to focus on accuracy rather than just getting distances off the tee, as it will be a huge challenge to avoid so many hurdles on the course.
"I've got issues in my head," he said. "It's something I've never done. It's only Monday right now so I'm really calm. Golf is not my everything so there's a lot of things running through my head".
"This is a week that my wife is not here, my new son is not here, so it's the first time out of the country away from them," added the 33-year-old who adopted son Caleb just before his Masters triumph.
"I've got to calm my mind down and focus on golf and try to get better. When I focus right I play pretty good and when I don't focus right I miss the cut pretty quick".
Last month, he played along with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson during the US Open and, as said by himself, he learned plenty of new things from both the players.
He stated that he learned the real meaning of the game by knowing the fact that the sport does not only require swing skills. In reality, it is much more than that.
He accepted that making long drives cannot be a good choice each time he enters a competition. Sometimes, a player needs to play safe and hit irons off the tee. It will definitely kill the distance gained. However, it can improve the end results sometimes.
For a player who has always considered safety as the last option, it will be a difficult task to choose the correct clubs on a course such as Lytham.
