Bubba Watson settles for tie at 18th place in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans – Golf News
Bubba Watson carded a two-under par 70 in the final round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans to tie for the 18th position on Sunday, April 29, 2012.
This was the same place where he recorded a win last year. While entering the tournament this year, he was among the hot favourites to win the title because of his recent great form.
He won the Masters Tournament prior to participating in the event and he was confident to win the tournament for the second consecutive time.
However, after the Zurich Classic Pro-Am, he expressed that he was tired and was not in a good position to play the tournament on a high note.
Therefore, he carded back-to-back 71 in the first two rounds to make the cut with one stroke. He played some good golf on Saturday and registered a score of seven-under par 65.
With an aim of improving his position in the tournament, he started his final round. However, his start was not as good as he expected.
Watson suffered two bogeys on the first two holes that he played. He made a comeback with three consecutive birdies starting from the fifth hole.
A bogey on the ninth hole took him again to level par score. Two bogeys on the 11th and the 12th hole were the last ones to come prior to the six par shots through the end.
“I played a little better (after the first two holes),” Watson said. “I still had some hiccups there in the middle of the round. Had a few bogeys. All in all, it was pretty good”.
“Being tired, coming back for the first time after winning the Masters, all this different media attention, all the stuff that comes with it, it’s just different. It’s something you have to get used to. It wears on you, kind of tires you out”.
At the end of the event, he was seven strokes off the pace set by the playoff duo, Jason Dufner and Ernie Els. Dufner won the tournament with a birdie on the second extra hole in the playoffs.
Watson now plans to return to his family and spend some time with them. He also confirmed that he will not return to the field till the Tournament Player’s Championship, scheduled in the middle of May, 2012.
“Got a week off. Scheduled to play TPC, The Players and then Memorial. Go home and be a dad and husband and see how I feel in a couple days,” he said.
