Bubba Watson shares the fifth position after day one of the Thailand Golf Championship
The reigning Masters champion Bubba Watson displayed a solid performance in the opening round of the Thailand Golf Championship, as he shot a four-under par 68, to tie for the fifth position, on Thursday, December 6, 2012.
Watson is one of the four major champions who are participating in the second last event on the Asian Tour roster, which is being held at the Amata Spring Country Club.
The big-hitting American felt a bit under pressure, as he conceded bogeys on some of the easy holes on the venue course.
Starting on the 10th hole, he reeled off birdies on the 11th and the 15th hole, to mark a strong start to his campaign in Bangkok.
He then lost a shot on the 16th hole. However, the 34-year-old made a strong comeback by recording birdies on the first and the third hole, with an amazing eagle lying in between them.
Thereafter, he lost the momentum and faltered for bogeys on the fourth, sixth and the eighth hole, against two birdies, that came on the seventh and the ninth hole.
At the end of the day, he found himself settled three strokes behind the pace set by Charl Schwartzel, who fired a seven-under par 65.
Watson is being regarded as one of the most fearsome contenders at the second last battle on the Asian Tour. However, a stiff challenge from his competitors cannot be ruled out.
The Bagdad, Florida resident, who mostly plays on the PGA Tour, spoke to the media at the end of the first round.
He expressed his disappointment in conceding a number of bogeys, especially after making such a strong start to his debut campaign in Thailand.
“It didn’t feel that good. It was a solid round but I made a few mistakes. Hit a cart path and bounced into the woods and had to take an unplayable and had a three putt on 17. Just little things like that. I finished with a birdie on the last so all in all,
I guess it’s not too bad,” said Watson.
He added, “I’m going to watch the TV coverage. I’ll go back and do some workouts and some therapy and get ready for tomorrow. Get some fluids in as well”.
