Bubba Watson takes lead midway through the Cadillac Championship – Golf News
Bubba Watson displayed a stunning show of birdies on the second day of the World Golf Championships – Cadillac Championship to take a one-stroke lead over his group mate in the tournament, Justin Rose, on Friday, March 9, 2012.
Watson finished just one stroke off the course record and carded a 10-under par 62 against Rose’s eight-under par 64.
He started off on the back nine of the course and birdied the very first hole. It was just the start of his amazing performance on the Tournament Players Club (TPC) Blue Monster at Doral, Florida.
Starting from the par-five 12th, he made three consecutive birdies, followed by par-birdie to register five-under par score on his first seven holes.
While playing course’s front nine, he again astounded his opponents and managed four birdies and an eagle against only one bogey.
Watson’s eagle came on the par-five eighth when he was standing at the fairway and the best way to reach the green was to get around a palm tree near the ropes.
“I took it right up the edge of that tree. There’s a little tree there and it actually nicked that limb a little bit,” Watson said.
He went on, “I hit it as hard as I could, just a low, what everybody calls a stinger. Hit as hard as I could low and knew it wasn’t going to slice. So all I was protecting was the draw and it went dead straight and came off perfect. And the rest is history”.
On the other hand, Rose also had a spectacular day at TPC Blue Monster, as he had a bogey-free round that included a total of eight birdies.
“Maybe they’ve been cutting the hole a little bigger,” Rose said.
Mark Wilson was another player who was playing alongside Rose and Watson in the group. He shot a respectable two-under par 70 to tie for the 28th position on the leaderboard.
“They did everything right,” Wilson talked about his group mates. “It was some of the best golf I’ve seen collectively between them”.
Tiger Woods, who is looking for a strong display of his game in the event, managed to card a bogey-free round of five-under par 67.
However, it was not enough to challenge the leader, as he was still seven strokes off the lead set by Watson.
