Bubba Watson wins Farmers Insurance Open
Bubba Watson bested Phil Mickelson by one shot in a sensational finish of the Farmers Insurance Open held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in California. Bubba Watson, who has won the Masters three times, finally felt confident enough to challenge some of the
best players in golf. The final day started with Phil Mickelson and Bill Haas tying for the lead but it was all Bubba Watson from thereon. After the victory, an emotional Watson, with tears in his eyes said, “I wanted to start the year off with a win but on
the other hand, I played really good golf and gave myself an opportunity. I played well on Sunday and had a good tournament. Hopefully, I'll use this as a springboard for next week."
The win at a Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour event has helped Watson improve his ranking in the World Golf Rankings by 15 places. He has broken into the top twenty at number 18. Known for his smashing swings with an average of over 315 yards
from the tee, the 40-year-old golfer wished his dad would be there to see him beating Tiger Woods. Watson was deeply attached to his father who died of cancer last year.
Another highlight of the event was Jhonattan Vegas, who finished with an impressive third place with three under par 69. The PGA tour rookie crushed Tiger Woods with an impressive five strokes. Vegas is determined to popularise the game of Golf in his native
Venezuela. His win at the Hope Classic last week forced Hugo Chavez to review his stance on Golf. Vegas has been impressive so far and has shown he has the skills to bag events in the future.
The Farmers Insurance Open is the worst event in Tiger Woods’ career so far. He finished on the leader board in 44th place. Woods clearly looked out of place on the course, which he has dominated until 2008, with eight wins. He was five over,
if his scores from Saturday and Sunday are combined. He finished the event with one under, after which he said, “I started out hitting it pretty good out here this week, it progressively got worse. We have some things that we need to work on.” Not only that
he missed putts and also had difficulties with his new swing. Tiger has been through a lot in 2010 and many believe that he will never be able to reach his former number one ranking again.
