Bubba Watson withdraws from the Players Championship, cites personal reasons
The Players Championship, often touted as the unofficial fifth major event on the PGA Tour, suffered a severe blow when the current Masters champion Bubba Watson and one of the raging tour players Dustin Johnson both decided to pull out of the event.
Watson, who had been touring the whole United States after his miraculous win the Augusta National, admitted that he is tired and exhausted and will have to rethink his schedule especially after failing to defend his title at Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Watson gave interviews to several news channels and TV shows including the famous CNN, CNBC, CBS, NPT, and several others and had entered the Zurich Classic beaten down and exhausted.
Watson is also eager to spend time with his family and his newly adopted son Caleb.
He said, “I’ve decided to pull out of the Players. I need to spend more time with (his son) Caleb and (wife) Angie, plan to take at least a month off-familytime”.
He added, “Sorry to disappoint fans but the PLAYERS has one of the best fields all year, tourney is more than fine without me. I feel blessed and excited that I get to spend quality time with Caleb and Angie in the next few weeks. I am lucky to play golf
for a living, it allows me to pick my own schedule”.
Watson leapt to stardom with a stunning approach shot from the thick bushes and was hailed as the rightful owner of the green jacket.
He overtook the rampaging Louis Oosthuizen on the second Playoff hole.
This will be first time Watson will be missing the Players Championship since 2006. Although the revered TPC Sawgrass does not suit his style of game, Watson insists that he has other reasons of pulling out of the star-studded event.
Executive Vice President of Communications and International Affairs for the PGA TOUR Ty Votaw regretted Watson’s decision to pull out of the event and said:
Some of the top-ranked European Tour players like Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy also missed the Players Championship last year which delivered a big blow to the credibility of the event.
