Bubba Watson's father passes away
Ryder Cup player, Bubba Watson’s father, passed away on Thursday morning after a long fight with throat cancer. Gerry Watson fought for the British army in World War II and he was a veteran in Vietnam. The Green Beret was suffering from throat cancer and
was under constant medical supervision.
His son, who was born in Florida, made an official announcement on his Twitter page that his father, Gerry Watson passed away on Thursday. He quoted that it was a sad day for him and his family.
After the announcement, many people from the golf fraternity shared their condolences with the 31-year-old golfer. Rory McIlroy twitted the player, "So sorry to hear that. The McIlroy's thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time".
Oliver Wilson, an English golfer wrote, “I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. My thoughts are with you & your family- Oli".
LPGA golfer, Suzann Pettersen gave her condolence and said that she was sorry for the player and he shouldn’t give up hope.
Apart from the players, the golf institutes like Ping Tour condoled with Bubba and told him that their prayers were with him and his family during their difficult time. Similar messages were given by Titleist, the manufacturer of sports gears.
October has been a tough month for the American. First he lost his debut Ryder Cup and then he lost his father. Bubba Watson announced his father’s illness in Wales where he arrived with his team. He told the press that he was putting a lot of effort in
the game, as he wanted to win it for his father, Gerry Watson, who was suffering from throat cancer.
He further added that his father was on his death bed and the doctors have given him a span of three months, therefore, he wanted to dedicate his game to him.
Unfortunately, Bubba was not successful in pleasing his father, as he lost the single or else United States would have won the Ryder Cup. Earlier when Bubba Watson got selected for the Ryder Cup team after defeating Francisco Molinari, Matt Kuchar, Ernie
Els and Nick Watney, he posted on his Twitter page that it was God’s plan to give him victory, so that his father could witness him win the Ryder Cup for Unites States.
According to sources, Bubba and his wife, Angie, who is a former basket ball player, will be travelling to Pensacola, Florida to join his family. The golfer has invited all his friends and family members to join him during this sad time. He gave this invitation
on Twitter in response to all the requests that poured in after the announcement.
Bubba had an idea of the sad news coming his way that is why he burst into tears at Celtic Manor. He told the press that he owed all his golf knowledge to his father. When Bubba was a kid, his father would take him to the golf course and ask him to hit 9-irons
on the fairways. His father’s efforts bore fruit in the Travelers Championship, where he surged to victory after a powerful iron play.
Bubba might have lost the Ryder Cup, but he surely made his sick father proud with his achievements as he is currently ranked in the top twenty- five players of the official World golf ranking.
