Buchanan High boys volleyball team beats San Gabriel in straight sets – Volleyball news
The Buchanan High boys volleyball team reminded its fans and peers on Tuesday the reason why they are ranked the Number One team in the Division I Southern California Regional as they demolished San Gabriel in the quarterfinals, 3 - 0.
Playing with the added advantage of being on their home court, Buchanan made a quick job of sending San Gabriel packing as each set of the match was won by a comfortable margin. The half-hearted effort that San Gabriel put in was reflected in the final set scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-13.
Tim Moses, star player for the Bears, spoke about their performance and his Coach John Jay, "I think we deserve our seeding but I don't think we've peaked yet. We want to be perfect and Coach says he feels it will come this week."
The Buchanan team played some aggressive volleyball and it was a very polished effort by the team. Jon Ferrari did exceptionally well and had 34 assists. He set up kills for the front line which included Smith, Tim Moses, Taylor Gasman, Ben Harding and Tyler Freeman. The frontal assault had pin-point accuracy and the team tore the San Gabriel defense to shreds.
The Buchanan team is entering the semi-finals with a win record that has given them confidence. Buchanan has been able to better their rivals a total of 37 times in this season so far. These victories have been pulled off at the cost of being beaten only three times. In comparison, San Gabriel is heading back home with a good but not stellar performance. The overall season record of San Gabriel shows 28 wins with six losses.
The Matadors could not get into a groove all through the match. The start of the first set of the game saw the Bears take control and put their rival under pressure. Once they had the lead, the Bears did not look back. All that the Matadors could do was hold on until the Bears had bagged themselves the opening set of the game at 25-15.
Capitalising on the momentum built by winning the first set of the game, the second set was set-off by the Bears with full confidence. In contrast, the Matadors were again having a tough time giving their rivals some real competition. The Bears were able to assert themselves all through the second set as well and ended up winning 25-17.
Losing the first two sets of the game increased the pressure on the Matadors tremendously. Rather than stepping up and challenging the dominant position of the Bears, the Matadors seemed to give up as they lost what became the final set by a meagre 13-25.
