Buchanan defeats Otay Ranch-Chula Vista by 3-2: High school Volleyball
Buchanan boys volleyball team had a electrifying matchup with Otay Ranch-Chula Vista on Saturday. By handing out a defeat to Otay 3-2, Buchanan was able to win the Southern California Regional Division I championship.
The game took on an intense tone as it reached five long sets to decide the winner. Interestingly, the Bears lost the first two sets to Otay and started off the third set with considerable pressure. However, they were able to find their momentum at the right
time in the third set of the game that finally took them to victory as displayed by the following final set scores: 24-26, 21-25, 25-17, 25-23 and15-12.
The Bears put in a strong team effort to secure the win. After being in a two set deficit, the Bears managed to step up their game and come out strong in the end. However, some players stood prominent because of their solid performances.
Among the Bears, the player who was able to post the highest number of kills at 13, was Taylor Gasman. The player was helped by his team-mate, Dakota Smith, who added nine kills to the score board. Two other Bears who were able to register eight kills each
were Ben Harding and Tim Moses. Apart from that, Jon Ferrari was able to make his presence felt by contributing 42 assists for the Bears whereas Aaron Smith managed 13 digs that were accentuated by a few service aces as well.
"One thing about these guys is they always find a way to come back and win," Bears coach John Jay said after his team had won the championship match. "They turned on another switch. We led at the start of every set. It was a matter of staying focused, putting
the pedal down and finishing."
The win for the number one ranking Bears has come as a much welcomed addition to their winning streak which now supports a total of 32 victories. Overall, the Bears have been able to tally wins at the cost of suffering only three losses.
Otay Ranch has matched the number of wins at 32 during the season but have made more losses at eight defeats.
During the first two sets of the game, the Bears made a lot of hitting errors which contributed to their first two set losses. However, they managed to get a grip of themselves and improve their game in the rest of the three. In the remaining sets, the Bears
outperformed their rivals and earned themselves the much deserved win at Irvine Valley College.
