Buck Showalter in talks with Baltimore Orioles for a multi year extension- MLB News
Baltimore Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter, who is known to turn team around from being bottom of the table dwellers to contenders, has revealed that talks for a contract extension are underway with the Orioles. It is rumoured that the birds and Showalter
are likely going to ink a multi year extension deal.
The process is ongoing and Buck declined to comment on the eventually expected timeline but said it wasn’t very closed to be finalised. “There’s a process,” he said. “I wouldn’t say close.”
Buck joined the O’s in 2010 and 2011 was his first full season in charge. Although the results in 2011 were not as good as one would have liked, the team showed resurgence in 2012 and won their first post-season spot since 1997. It was also their first winning
season in a decade and a half.
Peter Angelos, the owner of the Baltimore ball club is active in the negotiations. Buck said that his discussions with Peter are open. The emphasis, however, remains on the managing of the ball club.
“When Peter and I talk, it’s very open,” he said. “Everything has been about managing the ballclub.”
Buck’s current contract is till the close of 2013 season and the extension is expected to be of two to three years and possibly even more. The manager himself has down played the importance of the length of the contract or the salary as major factors.
“It’s not about the money or the length of the contract,” Showalter said.
Showalter has been pleased how the club has been moving and has said that he and the ball club have discussed parameters of a potential future deal.
“There’s nothing pressing,” Showalter said. “We’ve discussed parameters. I just told him I am happy with the direction of the club.”
He also responded to some criticism on the lack of action on the part of the O’s during the off-season. There have been some signings but hardly any of them can be termed as high profile. A number of free agents that were thought to be hot commodities in
the free agent market were hardly pursued and eventually signed with other clubs.
The manager is undeterred by the criticism and knows what the best for the club. He believes that sometimes the best moves are one that you do not make.
“I like what we’ve done. Some of the best moves you make are ones that you don’t make. We’ve done a lot of things to help the ballclub,” Showalter said.
Buck Showalter has been an inspiration to the Orioles just like the previous teams he helped in making a turn around. He is well liked by the fans and the players and considering how well he has done, it appears to be in the best interest of the Orioles
that he is associated with the team for a while to come.
