Buckeyes advance to the second round of NCAA Championship - Volleyball update
The women’s volleyball squad of Ohio State University, commonly referred to as the Buckeyes, downed their first opponent at the NCAA Championship on Thursday, December 1. They exhibited a spectacular game against Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders and bagged
a 3-1 (25-23, 25-27, 25-21, 25-18) victory. The first win at the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship helped the Ohio State Buckeyes to advance to the second round of the tournament.
All-Big Ten performer Mari Hole played an instrumental role in Buckeyes’ success at the NCAA Championship Opener. Hole contributed the match-high 18 kills and also added 14 digs. Junior Emily Danks followed up with 16 kills and a service ace. Junior setter
Amanda Peterson did an exceptional job at helping the spikers to get points. She accumulated 52 assists to go with three block assists. Junior middle blocker Mariah Booth clipped 10 kills and three block assists. The libero of Ohio State, Sarah Mignin, notched
14 digs in the match.
On the other hand, the Blue Raiders were led by Lindsay Cheatham and Maria Szivos, who pitched out 11 kills apiece. Setter Morgan Peterson recorded 33 assists and also had 13 digs, in the failing effort of Middle Tennessee.
The opening set of the match started out with balanced action from both sides. Gradually Blue Raiders set the tone for competition with back-to-back attacks and picked up a lead of 12-8. In response, the Buckeyes rallied a 5-1 run and crossed Blue Raiders
at 16-15. Ohio State’s lead was totally credited to Hole and Booth. The visiting MTSU team once again got better and converted the score to 23-22. Ohio State tied the score at 23-all and made a quick move to score the set points, which enabled Buckeyes to
claim the first set, 25-23.
After dropping the first set, raged-up Blue Raiders hit back aggressively and went on 10-1 run. They hit the ball hard and took the score 16-11. In the meanwhile, home team tallied a 5-0 run and came close to Blue Raiders’ score. The duo of Booth and Hole
equalled the score at 24-24. The very next moment, tie of scores shifted to 25-all. The competition was tough but eventually Blue Raiders managed to win the second set, 27-25.
In the tie-breaker third set, Ohio State took advantage of three Blue Raider errors, including two attack errors, which helped the Buckeyes to pick up lead at 5-4. The resilient rival, MTSU, offered strong resistance and retook the lead. It enticed the Buckeyes
to reel off 7-2 run. The hard work paid off and OSU went up. Afterwards, they remained on the winning course and sealed third-set win, 25-19.
Tied at 5-all early in the fourth set, the Buckeyes jetted ahead with a 6-1. They played fast and incorporated back-to-back kills from Peterson. MTSU could only score 16 points in fourth set, while OSU achieved set points. Ohio State won the match 3-1 and
celebrated victory.
