Bucky Lasek takes Skate Bowl victory at Portland Invitational – 2011 Dew Tour
Bucky Lasek kept his winning momentum going at the second stop of the 2011 Dew Tour, Portland Invitational, by walking away with top honours from the Skate Bowl Finals that went down on Sunday, August 14, at Portland, Oregon.
Pedro Barros finished in second place, while Andy Macdonald finished in third to round out the Top 3. Ben Hatchell and Willis Kimbel finished in fourth and fifth positions respectively.
After confidently making his way through the finals, the 38-year-old Lasek seemed intent on continuing his domination of the discipline by walking away with a successful result from the Super-Finals, which pitted him against a line-up comprising of five
extremely talented riders.
However, the five-man battle soon turned into a head-to-head battle between Lasek and the 16-year-old Barros. Both the riders were consistently managing to stay at par with each other’s performances.
It was the fourth run that allowed Lasek to overcome his rival and seal the fate of the contest in his favour. His winning run included a front-side blunt-side out of the deep and into the shallow, front-side grind back into the deep, McTwist into a backside
lip-slide out of the deep into the shallow, a back-side tail-slide out of the shallow back into the deep. The sensational final run earned him a winning score of 87.26 points.
During his interview after the final, Lakey said, “It feels awesome to win in Portland because this is the home of concrete parks and what better place to win on the portable bowl at Dew Tour. It's pretty exciting making the run that I made and making it
three times is a great accomplishment for me. I think lately I've had the heart of a tiger, just attacking it, going for it, living life and skateboarding.”
Despite putting up a strong fight throughout the Super-Final, the young sensation, Barros, eventually had to settle for second place with a score of 85.26 points. The huge 540s and high speed remained the highlight of his runs, making him a threat for Lakey
till the very end.
“Bucky stepped it up and he skated really good,” Barros said. “If I had a couple more runs, maybe I could have pulled off a run that would actually make a difference.”
Macdonald’s last run turned out to be his best, earning him a score of 83.13 points to put him in third place. His best run included an amazing three-wall combo consisting of a kick-flip Indy, a body varial 540 and lien varial disaster.
Hatchell finished in fourth position with a best-run score of 81.51 points, while Portland local, Kimbel, rounded out the Top 5 after earning 76.38 points off his best run.
