Bud Selig and Frank Coonelly remember Chuck Tanner
It hasn’t been long since Chuck Tanner passed away. The former Pittsburgh Pirates manager led the club to its last World Series triumph, and left behind a legacy for the future generation to emulate in the coming years.
There have been official statements coming through, addressing Tanner. Major League Baseball commissioner, Bud Selig, and Pittsburgh Pirates’ President, Frank Coonelly, have come out to issue statements on the legendary figure.
Major League Baseball Commissioner, Bud Selig, took out the time to address Tanner and speak out on his contribution to the fans and the game of baseball.
"Chuck spent his life serving baseball in a variety of roles, and I am particularly glad that in recent years, he returned to the Pirates, the club with which he will be forever linked".
Pittsburgh Pirates’ president, Frank Coonelly, also issued a statement on Chuck and his main emphasis was on the former manager’s attributes. He talked about his outlook on the Pirates’ fans and roster.
"Chuck was a class act who always carried himself with grace, humility and integrity. While no one had a sharper baseball mind, Chuck was loved by his players and the city of Pittsburgh because he was always positive, enthusiastic and optimistic about his
Bucs and life in general".
Frank went on to say that Chuck cared immensely about the players and their respective families. Frank elaborated on that concept by saying in his statement that Chuck poured most of his concentration on the positive quality of the people he worked with.
He further said that Tanner affected almost everyone with his positive look on the coming future and his active leadership.
Tanner will be remembered as the only manager to avail the Pirates their last World Series title (1979) against the Baltimore Orioles. What would make the memory more rich is the fact that the club was trailing 1–3 in the games tally before they went back
up to take the game away from the Orioles.
For Tanner, the journey was an emotional one as his mother had passed away during the series.
