It is better to start reading and then join a group on Yahoo and ask questions / learn there...

if you interested on Buddhism, you can start by reading some related material, and there is no necessary for you to join a sect to become a Buddhist, i don't.

In my opinion, buddhism is very peaceful compared to other religions like christianity and islam in that it has never caused trouble in the past. I am a buddhist, but I personally think my religion is boring and I strongly prefer christianity because of its generally bright atmosphere. However, I wouldn't stop anybody from choosing the path to becoming a devoted buddhist.
