Budget 2.1 audio system?

Question

Hi, I need a few suggestions

Currently have my Insignia NS-B2111 Bookshelf Speakers hooked up through my Klipsch sub that came with my old promedia 2.1, and I'm controlling them through the control pod. Now, would I notice a difference in sound quality if I was to switch to an actual receiver/sub? These are the ones I'm hoping to purchase soon.

This system will be used mostly for music, and some gaming. I'm looking for the best receiver I can get for under $150. I figured since I won't need HDMI? that I dont need an expensive receiver. Unless their is a way to get HDMI sound through my sound card (Xtrememusic). Thanks

I would recommend you upgrade your speakers.

Insignia isn't particularly good in terms of sound, IMO.

I would probably suggest looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer from JBL, Cerwin-Vega!, Klipsch, or Infinity.

I think you're on the right track there.  

I would opt for either the Dayton HSU8

(perfect for music is small to medium sized

rooms) or the Dayton SUB-120 as an even better

value than the 100 model for deeper bass and more

impact (I owned one until I upgraded to the Hsu Research

VTF-2 Mk3).  By the way, that's a great deal on the Onkyo.

Buy the receiver from shoponkyo.com.   They sell warrantied factory refurbs.  Right now they have 10% off and when you sign into the site you get a $10 credit on your first purchase.

The best sub for around $150-160 shipped is the Velodyne VX-10.

The best MUSIC sub on a budget is the av123.com "X" sub, it's $199+ shipping but is the BEST cheap sub for music.

The Dayton sub is kind of boomy and fine for home theater but lacks definition and finesse for music
