Budget accommodation in Mexico City?

Question

I will arrive in Mexico City on the coming Saturday and will need a budget accommodation (possibly in a US$ 10 - 20 / night) in the center of the city. Can you recommend me some (or at least an area where to look for)? How full do these hotels get over the weekends? Would it be OK to just come there on Saturday afternoon without reservation, or should I try to book something asap? (places available for booking tend to be more expensive ... but better than stay in the street)

Cheapest I could find for the night of March 1st is the Hotel Prim -- 1.5 miles from city center @ 35.00USD (that's 30% off the regular nightly rate).
