My sister wishes to only have vegan foods for her after baby is born Baby Shower. Now I know how to do vegan as we like to eat this way often, but am lost for budget friendly ideas. I'm not looking to do meals, but maybe various salads (not just greens), finger foods, dips, etc. I just need some help on the menu basically! Oh and I'm going for a sweet pea theme for her baby girl that was supposed to be a boy (no sonogram done), so foods related to this thought would also be a nice touch! Thank You!

  1. I can't stand people who are volunterily "vegan".  Put meat in all the foods secretly, and then when you get back home, tell her

  2. Well you should shop at a whole foods store you will definatly get more choices vs the average stop and shop store. Try a fruit and veggie platter, tofu burgers, vegan cupcakes, pasta salad with veggies, veggie soup, pea soup. Well I would try this website www.cooks.com and see if there are any great vegan recipies that interest you.

  3. you could have trays of fancy fruits and vegies. ( pinapple, mango, strawberrys, blueberrys, carrots, celery, cucumber, ect.). sprigrolls, chips, pretzels, nuts, ect. hope i helped :")

  4. Firstly sprouts are fine for nursing women.  Sprouts can contain e. coli and are risky for immuno-compromised persons and arguably pregnant women.  However a nursing women would have to develop sepsis (blood infection) from food poisoning for it to effect her baby at all, and that is incredibly rare.

Really the best thing to do is to shop what's in season and bulk things up with grains.

Can a nursing mother eat unpasteurized soft cheeses?

Yes, nursing mothers can eat soft cheeses. Unpasteurized soft cheeses (and other unpasteurized dairy products) can carry a bacteria called listeria monocytogenes. Cheese made in the United States must be made from pasteurized milk (pasteurization kills the listeria organism), but imported cheeses may be a problem. Listeriosis is usually a minor flu-like illness in healthy adults, but can cause serious problems for pregnant women and may be linked to stillbirth and miscarriage (as it can be passed to baby via the placenta). Although eating unpasteurized dairy products is not recommended during pregnancy, it is not considered a problem for nursing moms.

Per Lawrence (Breastfeeding: A guide for the medical profession 1999, p 569), "No evidence in the literature suggests transmission of Listeria through breastmilk." This reference indicates that the only thing that might interfere with breastfeeding is a mother's inability to nurse due to severe illness.

"Maternal infections of the genitourinary or gastrointestinal tract do not pose a risk to infants except in the rare circumstances when septicemia occurs and bacteria might reach the milk. Even in this event, continued breastfeeding while the mother receives appropriate antibiotic therapy that is compatible with breastfeeding is the safest course for the infant. If the infecting organism is especially virulent or contagious (e.g., an invasive group A streptococcal infection causing severe disease in the mother), breastfeeding should continue after a temporary suspension during the first 24 hours of maternal therapy. Prophylactic or empiric therapy for the infant, against the same organism, may be indicated." [source: Lawrence RM & Lawrence RA. Given the Benefits of Breastfeeding, what Contraindications Exist?

  5. Do you have Vegan with  Vengance by Isa Moskowitz?

There is a recipe for Mango Spring Rolls with spicy peanut dipping sauce. It makes about 40 rolls, and you could add sugar snap peas to the filling of the spring rolls, instead of the sprouts that the recipe calls for because Sprouts can be hazardous to nursing mothers.

It's a pretty cheap and easy recipe, and if you need help I might could get it to you.

  6. -A falafel platter (falafel, tomato and cucumber slices, pita wedges, and tahini or Annie's Green Goddess dressing)

    -veggie kabobs

-hummus, tabouleh, and baba ganouj with crackers and veggies

-carob fondue with bananas, strawberries, and kiwi

    -vegan mini pizzas

    -spiral sammies

    -tortillas chips, salsa and guacamole

-any potato/pasta salad (you can use Veganaise, it's really yummy)

-quinoa salad (lots of interesting recipes to be found online)

    -olive tapenade

    -fried green tomatoes

    -veggie dumplings

Serve it all on green plates and dishes, serve 3 dishes together tied with a green ribbon so it looks like peas in a pod!
