check out lastminute.com.au and wotif.com for some fairly cheap options for accommodation in Australia.

There's a few choices normally even if you're looking at budget stuff...

For Sydney have a look at the link below. They have a map where you can look up .which one is closest to where you want to stay.

These are $69 a night. The rooms are very simple, a big double bed with a bunk single bed above, some open hanging space for clothes, a shower and toilet. No room service, most have buffet breakfast (extra) but some are next door to fast food places (McDonalds Kentucky etc)

Too small  for lounging around in but good value if you'll only be going back there to sleep. Very clean.

The closest to Gold Coast is in Brisbane, a bit too far for you probably, but there are 3 or 4 to choose from in Sydney.

stay at the YHA's - the one in Sydney is smack bang in the middle of the city with loads of help and advice and getting around, things to see and do etc

Have had very bad experiences with the Breakfree hotel at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.

They gave someone else our room keys, and they walked in on us when we were sleeping.

No apology or anything.

The floor and couches were so filthy we pulled the quilts off the spare beds and put them over the couches and wore thongs everywhere.
