Budgie Fertility help!?

Hi,

I have started breeding budgies, i have successfully breed the smaller pet budgies but have decided to try a a couple of pairs of the exhibition budgies. Both pairs have laid eggs but all were infertile i know that they are all proven birds and only two years old. My question is that could the infertility be down to the thick feathering and so do i need to trim it?

If so how do you trim the feathers?

Thanks.

  1. Feathering has nothing to do with fertility!!

Diet is one of the main factors in fertility, are you sure they are proven breeders and only 2 years old?.

A good diet includes Greens in small portions good quality seed and Cuttle-bone along with a Mineral block.

Also they need a good flight for exercises, this in turn helps to-ward fertility.

Also were they Moulting just prior to egg laying.or just finished?

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere the U.K. for instance then the breeding season for exhibition birds is held back till December by Exhibition breeders.

It would be worth your while buying a book on Breeding Exhibition Budgies, these are quite reasonable and contain a mine of information.

  2. If the vent feathers on your budgerigar are to "feathery" the sperm wont be transmitted to the female properly. You can trim the vent feathers quite easily. It could also be that your not feeding them the correct food for breeding budgies. Some male budgies have problems filling eggs... I have a male that has never successfully filled an egg.
