1. She may be egg bound.. Egg binding is when a bird produces an egg and cannot lay it. There can be various reasons for the occurrence of egg binding. Egg binding is very serious, and an avian vet must be consulted right away if you suspect your bird may be egg bound. This is the only thing I can think of, unless she's infertile. Then again, the swollen cloaca could be a symptom of egg binding.

  2. Hey, this also happened to my female budgie! She stays in the nest for most of the time and when she comes out to stretch, she also ended up mating with her pair. They mated a lot, like every other day for the whole August this year. Around the third week, I noticed an increase in size of her vent. It would get really large and make your female budgie's body shape tubular.

I also feared she may be egg bound, for she carried the eggs for a week. Fortunately, she wasn't and she laid her 4th egg yesterday. How long have you noticed the swollen vent? Maybe she is still in the period of forming eggs, which takes about 8-10 days after the successful mating. Within this period, you must give them cuttlebone and what I also did was to put powdered milk in some of their seeds and I also gave them leafy veggies. You might still have a chance of having your hen. If she has that swollen vent for a very long time, I must say you must consult an avian vet. The least thing I can do to help is to give you signs of an egg-bound hen.

    1. She stays in the bottom, making egg-laying gestures and tries very hard to lay.

    2. Her breathing is heavy, she pants as she breathes.

    3. Her tail noticeably bobs up and down when she breathes.

    4. She has a swollen vent for a considerable period of time like for 2-3 weeks.

    5. She will be depressed and loses her appetite.

I hope this would not happen to your hen as egg-binding is a very serious matter and you might lose your hen if proper action is not given immediately.

Hope this helps! Good luck with your hen and don't lose hope.
