I changed her food gradually to pellets and I have them grinded up so she can eat them good. She eats them, but for the past few days she's been sitting in her cage with feathers ruffled and looking sad. Should I just give in and give her seed that she likes? I don't like it when she is sad.

  1. I would take my bird to the vet either way, that's just the way I am,because the way you made it sound, she was eating the pellets.I found an even healthier food for the birds than pellets or in conjunction with pellets, however it is very expensive, but when I tell you ,there is literally no waste and I actually tasted it because it smelled so good and it could actually be consumed by humans,I had my cockatiels on a pretty much mosty seed diet with some pllets mixed in and then I bought a bag of this at animal kingdom to try it first and mixed it with the seeds and within a week they could care less about the seeds and the bird wasn't tossin g food all over the place. It's called islandtreats.com all one word see if you can get a smaller bag first of garden pleasure or garden paradise I can't remember at this second but get the small one and you'll be pleased and it won't be grueling to change your babies diet to a healthy one.But please for your own mind unless all of the sudden your bird eats ubelievably and is fine in the morning take her to the vet.

  2. She needs to go to the vet.  If she was eating them fine and has stopped, along with a puffed appearance, she is sick.  See if she'll eat seed; if she eats voraciously she's probably starving.  Earlier she may have been playing with or even grinding the pellets without ingesting them.  So yes--try to feed her seed and see what happens.  If she runs to her food dish and chows down and looks better after an hour or so you're probably out of the woods.  Better to eat a seed diet than nothing at all!  Then try again to convert her to pellets but go even more slowly and carefully.

edit: If she doesn't run and eat and look better right away, get her to the vet ASAP!

  3. Go back to seed and see what she does. Some birds will starve themselves to death. If she is puffed up then she is sick or getting sick. See what she does with seeds and go from there. If she wont eat those either than off to vet you go. If you want to try pellets than put in separate dish with other treats that she likes. there is alot of controvery over pellet versus seeds diets. I say do they have pellets in wild? I try to give my birds a varied diet which includes some people food such as carrots stuck in bars so its a treat but a toy at same time. Small chunks of apples and some dry cereals whole grain. Good luck.
