  1. I am sorry, but I am running a personal crusade against people keeping single budgies in a cage. In the wild, budgies hang around in flocks of several hundred and miss the company of other birds and are easily bored. PLEASE keep budgies in avairies with others of their own kind.

If a budgie trusts you, it will perch on your hand and not fly away.

The best way of ensuring that budgies get a balanced diet is to opt for one of the many brands of budgie food. These are a balance of different seeds, often supplemented by the addition of essential minerals. The cuttle fish bone can be used to give the bird something to keep its bill in good order and provide minerals.

Keep a good eye on the feathers and have any poor condition treated by a vet.

  3. 1 - This depends on how the bird reacts when your in the same room, some are naturally shy creatures and others are friendly and like to nibble the ear with affection.

    2. Again this depends on the bird!

Every bird i've had has been different in persoanlity & taste.

Soft Veg was a good one for my last budgie, the budie i have now is a fan of carrot & soft fruit, grapes & plum & peaches.

  4. 2.Without water life cannot exist on earth. Water is the single most important part of the diet. It is a grave error to believe that budgerigars, as natural inhabitants of semi-arid zones, do not depend on good quality water.

Drinking water should be clean, free of chlorine, disinfectants and chemical additives. Leave strongly chlorinated  tap water to stand for a few hours in a large bowl to permit the chlorine gas to escape. Boiling the water kills germs but makes the water rather tasteless. Do not use poor quality water or water with a high salt content. Nongaseous, bottled mineral water  is an expensive but safe alternative. Change the drinking water twice daily to prevent the build-up of pathogenic bacteria, mainly coli bacteria which can lead to fatal crop and intestinal tract infections. Use detergents sparingly.

Budgerigars need mixed seeds as a basic diet. Pet shops usually sell the basic seeds or seed mixures which contain mostly canary seed, millet, linseed, niger, rape, sometimes oat, wheat or an artificial grain. Artifical grain may consist of flour, dried egg yolk, dried milk, alfalfa meal, iodine, vitamins and so on. Budgerigars also enjoy sunflower seeds and a selection of seeding grasses, which can be dried during the seeding season. Seed mixures are usually iodized deficiency. You can attach iodine blocks to the inside of the cage if you are unsure whether your seed mixture is iodized. Spray millet is a real treat but do not givve it everyday because it is very rich in energy.

Supplement the above mentioned vasic seed diet with a variety of fruit and green food such as apple, carrot, chickweed, dandelion, chickory, spinach and seeding grasses. It is important to wash all green food, and collect only where you know it is safe and free from insecticides, weed killer, pollution from roads, or any other harmful substances.

Sprouted seeds can partially replace green food, particularly in winter time. Their preparation is quite simple: from your usual seed mixure soak enough seeds in water to make a day's supply; keep in a warm place for 24 hours;rince thoroughly several times and leaves standing in a warm place for another 24 to 48 hours. Good fresh should have sprouted by then. Rinse the food to wash off microscopic fungi, and discard mouldly sprouts as they may cause enteritis.

During the brooding and rearing period, breeders like to offer various breeding mixures, soaked wheat bread, boiled eggs, grated cheese, titbits, and so on. However, do not leave such food for more than a few hours, depending both on the food and the environmental conditions. Breeders also give vitamin preparations during brooding and rearing.   There are no scientific objections to this, although a stressful period such as breeding or moulting.

Never give junk food, strongly salted or spiced food, butter, crackers, chips, biscuits, softs drinks and alcohol to budgerigars, much as they might beg for it.

You must protect feed and water from contamination by droppings, and most commercial feed containers are protected by a hood. For the same reasons, you should clip feed containers to the cage wire and should not place them on the floor, unless you have fledglings. Babies may have trouble finding the feed container, and seed bowl on the floor could help them. Perches must not be fitted directly above feed or water containers. Check feed containers daily, blow away empty husks from the tops, change feed daily and remove perishable fruit and green food.

  5. If he trusts you, you can put your hand in the cage and it'll climb up on it.

    * They caould have some bird gravel. And the specialized food for them that you can find at most stores.

  6. You never give a parakeet Gravel. I know they sell it in the pet shops. They sell coats for dogs, that doesn't mean they need to wear coats.

Gravel/grit will cut a parakeets gizzard and stomach up. Any bird that hulls it's food doesn't need grit/gravel. The grit just grinds up seeds in the gizzard. If they hull their own seed

they don't need grit. Feed the bird everything you can get it to eat. Corn, peas, green beans, broccoli, carrots, apple oranges, grapes and bananas. Stale bread.

Now go purchase a book so you don't kill your precious little bird.  I am on a campaign to get people to purchase a book about their species of bird four weeks before they purchase the bird. That way you don't kill it while waiting for sometimes stupid answers on this site. For every good answer there are ten stupid ones.
