Buenos Aires to host the South American Championships after forty-four years - Athletics News
The South American Championships in athletics, a biennial sporting event that is organised by CONSUDATLE, is returning to Buenos Aires after a gap of about forty-four years. The event was first held in 1919, where Chile and Uruguay were the only participants in the tournament.
Today, the South American Championships has expanded well and is organised after every two years. This year, the event will mark its 47th edition, which will also make it the oldest Area Championships in the athletics world. In an attempt to retain their leading position in the event, Brazil, which has been dominating the event since 1975, will try to put in their best effort for retaining the top place.
The respective places to the countries in the event are assigned on the basis of points that their athletes score. The country which bags most of the points is declared as the winner of the event.
In order to retain their dominance in this year’s event, Brazil will be relying upon their formidable athletes like Maurren Maggi, the Long Jumper, who bagged the gold medal at Beijing Olympics 2008, along with the Pole Vault World Indoor Champion of 2010, Fabiana Murer and Keila Costa, the Long Jump specialist who bagged the bronze medal at the World indoor Championships.
Irving Saladino, the Long Jumper who bagged a gold medal at the Beijing Olympic 2008, is expected to participate, along with the 200m specialist and winner of the 2009 World Championships’ silver medal, Alonso Edward. Saladino and Edward will represent Panama.
Argentina will rely upon their throwers like German Lauro, the winner of the 2009 South American championships in the Shot Put and Discus Throw competitions, along with Jennifer Dahlgren and Juan Ignacio Cerra, the South American record holders at Hammer. Cerra, the 34-year-old thrower will be looking forward to claim a title in the ninth South American championship of his career.
After sending in a strong team to represent them in the event, every participating nation will be expecting their athletes to put up a good show.
