  1. Both Blue Ray and HD-DVD but I have neither yet.  Bills for food, gas, clothes, expendable resources and other electronics need to be paid first.

  2. well blue-ray is better but more expensive...dvds are at the point now where most films are dirt cheap this is the perfect time to buy a dvd player and movies for it...personally i dont think thier is anything wrong with dvd for now but when the time comes ill go blue-ray over HDDVD :]

  3. I dont know what a blue ray or a dvd is. Sorry I'm old and still stuck in vcr era.

  4. WTF is Bueray? Never heard of it... I use Blu-ray HD format for my movies and games... I haven't touched a regular dvd in a while.

  5. Blue ray, pls.

  6. Hi Jack,

HD DVD (Toshiba) vs Blu Ray (Sony).

The battle rages and it looks like consumers will have to face a dual format much like the dash R and plus R DVDs.

Samsung & LG already offer dual format machines and others will follow. This probably means both formats will survive.

Both use interactive menus but differences are – Blu-Ray capacity is 50Gb and HD-DVD is 30Gb. HD-DVD is region free while Blu-Ray is divided into three regions. (Figures Sony will try to stick it to the consumer) A disadvantage to HD-DVD is they are not all hard coated as are the Blu-Ray. HD-DVDs scratch as easily as regular DVDs while the Blu-Ray are more scratch resistant.

  7. I joked with my wife that now that I bought an HD-DVD player for Christmas, it would sway to Blu-ray.

I payed $185 for the Toshiba HD-A3 player and it included 10 free HD-DVDs.  At the same time, the lowest prices for Blu-ray players were about $400.

I figured that at that price, I payed $100 for the player and $10 an HD-DVD.  It replaced my 9 year old DVD player.

As an upconverting DVD player, the Toshiba HD-DVD player does a beautiful job with playing my existing DVDs on my 42" plasma TV.  HD-DVDs look even better.

For me, the picture is not "earth shattering" with Blu-ray or HD-DVD when compared to DVD when I'm sitting 12 feet away from the TV - it's just nicer and better.

Currently, Paramount only offers shows like Star Trek Season 1 on HD-DVD and not on Blu-ray.

Currently, Walt Disney / Pixar only offers their films in Blu-ray and not on HD-DVD.

Harry Potter 1-5 is available in both HD-DVD and Blu-ray (from Warner Brothers).

Unfortunately, for me, Warner Bros just announced that they will no longer make movies available in HD-DVD, that they will only do Blu-ray and regular DVD.

There are more movie studios and consumer electronics manufacturers behind Blu-ray than there are behind HD-DVD these days.  In the long run, it will most likely be Blu-ray.

I looked at the trade-off this way - I got a really nice upconverting DVD player for $100, got 10 movies for $10 a piece, and bought some time until Blu-ray players come down to a more reasonable $200 versus $400 today.  And, if HD-DVD lives much longer than I expected or wins out, then I got to save $200.

There are combo players that may be announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) from Samsung and others.

You can pre-order one from Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-BD-UP5000-...

But my feeling is that it would be cheaper to buy two separate players (HD-DVD and Blu-ray) with an HDMI switch than it would be to buy one combo player, which may have compromises.

If you just "have" to have a hi-def video player, place your bets and realize that you might end up picking a losing formate.  Right now, the odds are in favor of Blu-ray -- if for no other reason than the fact that I bought an HD-DVD player.
