I have a 1997 suv and I started to notice rust is just begining to form. I already know my clear coat is gone, and just barley little dots of brown are appearing within my rear license plate area, which is very noticeable because the suv is white. what is the easiest way of dealing with this? I have never used a buffer before, is that the right thing to use? compounds or any solutions that work well? anything really would help! thanks

  1. buffing them out will not solve the problem, only make it worse.

since the buffing will remove any coverage that there is, the exposed metal will rust faster.

best bet would be to sand down and prime followed with a base coat clear coat.

also look into carwell.com if you are in a wet, salty area.

  2. a buffer won't take rust off, you need to see a bodyshop and get it repaired before it really starts spreading.

  3. If you're not too worried about the paint, you could probably use an SOS pad and then touch up the paint a little.  You probably don't want to paint over the rust, though.
