Buffalo Bills Sign First-Rounder C.J. Spiller
C.J. Spiller ended his rookie holdout from training camp by signing a five-year contract with the Buffalo Bills, who drafted him ninth overall in this year’s draft.
The running back’s deal is worth $25 million with $20.8 million guaranteed, however, that amount could go as high as $37 million if certain incentives are met.
Spiller missed the Bills’ first 11 practices of training camp and the Bills have to be relieved to get this deal done. Spiller is expected to play a huge role in new head coach Chan Gailey’s offence. Not only will he get a healthy dose of carries, but he’s expected to play a big role in the passing game. The Bills have a noticeable weakness at quarterback with Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick competing for the starting job.
Spiller joins Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson, as the trio of running backs will have to be the bread and butter of the Bills offence this year.
The Clemson graduate was unbelievable in his collegiate seasons. In his four years in the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) he had 51 touchdowns, with 32 rushing touchdowns. Many have compared him to New Orleans Saints Reggie Bush, as these two backs are the only ones to finish college with 3,000 yards rushing, 1,500 yards in kickoff returns, 1,000 yards receiving, and 500 yards in punt returns. He’s a versatile player who can help the Bills out in many ways.
Spiller drew praise from Coach Gailey, Bills General Manager Buddy Nix, and owner Ralph Wilson. Wilson referred to Spiller as "one of the best players in the country," and someone who could provide a spark to what he called a "dull team." Indeed they are. The Bills have ranked 25th or worse in yards gained in each of the last seven seasons, and have not made the playoffs in over ten years.
