Buffalo Bills’ Steve Johnson apologizes over celebrating incident – NFL News
Buffalo Bills’ Steve Johnson has apologized to New York Jets Plaxico Burress after he had mimicked him and the Jets during a touchdown celebration on Sunday. The celebration had also included a mockery of a plane crashing to the
ground and an act reminiscent of Burress shooting himself.
The celebrations though had only served to help the Jets as it brought in a 15-yard penalty that badly affected Bills progress. It somehow led to the Jets tying the score at that critical stage.
Burress confirmed that Johnson had apologized leaving him a voice message and texting him.
Talking in a show on ESPN 1050 Radio, Burress said that Johnson had realized his mistake that embarrassed him and his team mates and coaches. He appeared calm and cool saying Johnson was young and had made a mistake. Burress maintained
that he respected Johnson as a player.
"I don't think he took into consideration that happened to me when he did it," Burress said.
Burress added that he wouldn’t have been so polite had the incident occurred a few years back when he was younger and immature but now he said experiences had taught him to be mature.
Bills coach Chan Gailey was not happy over the celebration incident that had contributed to his team’s loss. The coach said what Johnson did was wrong and he had told him so but regretted that his player was being associated with
that particular action only rather than all the good things he had done in the game.
Gailey has already talked to the team on this matter and does not have any punishment in mind for Johnson.
"The question you always ask yourself, it's always the question of if I have benched everybody for every dumb mistake that was made there wouldn't be any coaches or players out there because we've all made dumb mistakes. Everybody
makes mistakes.” Gailey said.
Jets coach Rex Ryan was unaware of the celebration incident while he was holding his press conference after the game. He appeared pleased that Johnson had apologized to Burress and termed the incident “ridiculous”. Some of the
Jets players had been offended by the incident.
Johnson said that he will not continue with such celebrations after scoring, saying that the touchdown celebration on Sunday was his last. He said that he took his conversation with his coach Gailey seriously. Johnson added he
would listen to his coach.
This is not the first time that Johnson has been involved in trouble. A year back he was fined twice by the NFL for $15,000 on account of celebrating too much in New England.
