Buffalo Bills cut WR David Clowney, others to consolidate roster strength – NFL News
The Buffalo Bills have officially confirmed release of nine players to cut down their roster strength to 75 players as of Monday under the requirement of the professional league regulator National Football League (NFL).
Bills are not the only team as far as roster consolidation is concerned; all 32 franchises of the league are required to reduce the number of players on their pay roster down to 75, respectively, which before Monday was up to 93 players.
The teams are required to further consolidate strength to 53 players at the time season starts next month, and the process to comply with the league’s rules sees many rookies, first and second-year ones in most cases, leave their sides unceremoniously.
For example, the players released by Bills include linebacker Danny Batten and receiver David Clowney. They are 2010 draft selections of the team.
Other waivers are defensive backs Nick Sukay and Prince Miller, defensive linemen Jay Ross and Sean Ferguson, guard Jake Vermiglio, receiver Derek Session and tight end Fendi Onobun.
Further, tight end Mike Caussin is likely to be out of the side for a longer period given he has been placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. The injury scares are another way of indirect help in teams’ efforts of clearing up their rosters.
Bills' cleansing drive was expected to launch last week but for unknown reasons it was delayed until Sunday, a day before the deadline of meeting requirement of reduced roster strength. All other teams are almost done with their roster shake-up plans.
As per the information available, the players released by Bills other than those who had spent a couple of years with the team were fresh signees. A majority of them had been hired during the offseason to get extra hands for help in training camp.
Since the regulator allows having 93 players maximum during the offseason and training camp phases, it is an expected norm that the teams hire players on year-long lowest-paid contracts for help in training camp and release them in the closing period of
the camps.
Away from the post-training camp shake-up and adjustments, the deadline for trade of the league players otherwise is sixth week of the regular season.
