Buffalo Bills defensive end Mario Williams insists he never hid his wrist injury – NFL News
As the National Football League (NFL) is undertaking an investigation about whether running back Mario Williams’ wrist injury was kept secret by Buffalo Bills, Williams himself has come out and said that he has never hidden anything about the injury.
In his interview with the Buffalo News on Monday, October 08, 2012, Williams made it clear that he had no involvement in keeping the injury secret. Williams said:
"All I do is I go out and I practice, I brace it up, do whatever I need to do to practice, and I play in the game. Now, I don't report anything. I don't know all the odds and ends about [the injury report]. I don't know if you go through practice if you
report that or not. The players don't control that.”
Bills did not list Williams in the injury report during any week of this season. The listing of injury in the weekly injury report is mandatory according to NFL rules and Bills will be penalised for their undoing if they are found guilty.
Williams has been complaining about having a bit of pain in his left wrist since the start of the season.
Bills head coach Chan Gailey previously talked a bit about that injury during the offseason but has been quit about it ever since.
During the postgame press conference on Sunday, October 07, Gailey denied commenting on the media reports that NFL was investigating this matter.
Williams carried on and revealed that the coaching staff knew about this injury all the time. He said:
"I've mentioned it before. The coach has actually said it before about my wrist. I've been asked before how my health was after the Jets game. I said my wrist was banged up.”
It is intriguing to see Williams giving justification about this matter. He will not be punished for the wrong doing of the coaching staff.
However, there seems to be another piece in the puzzle. It is quite possible that Williams has exaggerated his wrist pain as an excuse for his miserable performance since the start of the season. He has only been able to score 1.5 sacks in five games.
Although he hit quarterback Alex Smith twice during last game against San Francisco 49ers which they lost 45-3, he has not been able to meet the standard expected from a $100 million player.
