Buffalo Bills defensive end Mario Williams says it was Houston Texans who decided to release him
In recent weeks, Buffalo Bills defensive end Mario Williams has been getting a lot of attention for his comments on various subjects varying from his wrist injury to poor output on the field. On Wednesday, October 31, 2012, he dropped another bombshell.
Talking to the KRIV-TV, Williams said that he never wanted to leave his previous team Houston Texans in the offseason; it was rather Texans’ decision to release him. He said:
"I didn't want to enter free agency in the first place, but it was a one-way door given to me by the GM to leave Houston, I want the fans there to know entering free agency was not my decision."
Texans general manager Rick Smith refused to give his views on the comments made by Williams.
Just three days after being released by Texans, Williams went on to become the most expensive defensive player in the National Football League (NFL) by signing a six-year $100 million contract with Buffalo Bills.
Williams has revealed this secret just a few days before he faces his former team as Bills play against Texans in Week 9 tie on Sunday November 04.
The defensive end expressed excitement on playing against a team with which he started his career. Williams said:
"I'm definitely excited about coming back to the place where it all began, I have the opportunity to play against the team that originally drafted me. The way things ended, I definitely feel like it was kind of a rough and all-of-the-sudden goodbye. There's
some things that I'm definitely uneasy about, the final decision-making that happened there.”
Williams was drafted by Texans as the first overall pick in the 2006 draft and went on to become one the most successful defensive players in the franchise history. He got as many as 53 sacks in six seasons with the team.
One should acknowledge that Williams had an outstanding time with Texans, but the former two-time Pro Bowler was having injury problems which might be the reason behind Texans’ decision to release him.
The injury woes have affected Williams’ performance this season as well, making Texans’ decision sound like a good one.
