Buffalo Bills fire head coach Chan Gailey along with assistant head coach Dave Wannstedt – NFL News
After unsuccessful three seasons with the team as head coach, Chan Gailey was finally sacked by the Buffalo Bills on Monday, December 31, 2012.
The decision came just a day after Bills ended another disappointing campaign. Gailey is shown the door alongside his entire coaching staff that includes assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt.
Meanwhile, the future of general manager Buddy Nix also hangs in balance as he remained in the team facility this weekend while CEO Russ Brandon went for a meeting with the franchise owner Ralph Wilson.
Under Gailey, Bills have lost double the amount of games they have won with a 16-32 record over three seasons. The team has ended last two seasons with a 6-10 record each.
Gailey had brief appearance in front of the media after the announcement was made about his departure. According to the Associated Press, Gailey said:
"I understand this is a business. We didn't get the job done. . . I've been called two other times to get things turned around, was able to do it. We weren't able to get this one done soon enough, and I understand that completely."
The coach had only one year left in his contract with Bills. The team has spent big sum of money during the last few seasons, but has failed to get fruitful return from their investment.
This includes defensive end Mario Williams who was acquired with a mighty $100 million contract that made him the most expensive defensive player in the history of the National Football League (NFL).
Bills also gave long-term contract to their important players including quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and wide receiver Stevie Johnson.
However, all these players did not manage to give the quality of performance that was expected from them. With tears in his eyes, Gailey went on and said:
"I think that the next staff will have a great opportunity for success, and make this another great football franchise. This will probably be, and I say probably, but I think it will be the first place that's ever fired me that I'll pull for."
