Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix hints at drafting a franchise quarterback in 2013 – NFL News
Buffalo Bills General Manager Buddy Nix has demanded a bit more time from the fans to make the team of playoff calibre. While giving his point of view on various subjects on Wednesday, December 05, 2012, Nix asked the fans to have patience.
The most important subject that the GM addressed was the quarterback position. Nix clarified that ever since joining the team three seasons ago, he has emphasised on filling the loopholes on the roster first rather than drafting a franchise quarterback.
According to the Associated Press, Nix said:
"There's two ways of looking at doing it: You could get your quarterback first and then try to fill the other holes around him. But then you take a chance on injury and a chance on breaking his confidence down... What we did was we had so many needs to start
with that every time there was a high-rated player there, we knew he would fill a spot."
Nix also did not shy away from the questions regarding the team’s plan to draft a franchise quarterback next year.
The general manager made it clear that the team would jump on the opportunity if a player of good calibre becomes available for them. Nix said:
"I think the priority is the same. I think (fans) could take it to the bank every year. We had that intent every year, and we've got it again.”
It could sound an alarm bell for current starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The quarterback has failed to end the Bills’ playoff drought that dates back to the start of the new millennium.
Fitzpatrick went through the lowest phase of his career during the team’s 1-5 stretch this season in which he threw away 10 turnovers.
Nix has previously shown interest in getting a top draft quarterback. Addressing the Quarterback Club luncheon on Monday, December 03, Nix said that every team wants to draft a quarterback of great skills.
The wind seems to be changing its direction for Fitzpatrick. Despite head coach Chan Gailey showing faith on the quarterback for leading the team in coming years, things could make a turnaround if Nix remains stern on his plans.
