Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey believes lack of mental toughness behind Week 4 loss – NFL News
After showing disastrous performance in their Week 4 game against New England Patriots, it was expected that Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey would put his team on notice to rethink about the reasons behind losing the game in such a manner.
During his Monday news conference, Gailey pointed at various things that led to one of Bills’ biggest loss in their history. He blamed his team for not having mental toughness to retain the lead of 14 points which they had in the third quarter.
Bills were 21-7 in the third quarter, but ended up giving away 45 points in the second half to lose the game 28-54.
Gailey also criticised himself for not doing enough to make the team’s mindset tough enough to hold on to the lead. Gailey said:
"You can't be ahead 21-7 in the third quarter. And if we're mentally tough like we need to be, that game doesn't end up the way it ended. And that's my responsibility, to work on the mental toughness and the mindset of this football team."
The coach was particularly disappointed with the way his defence collapsed in the second half.
Before the start of the season, it was expected that Bills defence would be one of the best in the league and could push the team in the postseason after a span of 12 seasons.
However, Bills defence was completely dismantled by Patriots offence as they gave away 580 yards, the second highest in the history of the franchise.
Gailey needed to give such comments as his team would have to rethink about their output on the field. Gailey carried on and said:
"After a game like that, you're dissatisfied with a lot of things. Let's not just pick out one thing. I've got to work on the mindset of this football team and creating a sense of urgency every snap of every game."
Bills will now a enter stretch of five games out of which four games would be on road. They will play San Francisco 49ers next week.
