Buffalo Bills increases the depth at quarterback position as they hold on to Tyler Thigpen – NFL News
Buffalo Bills have immensely increased the depth at quarterback position by keeping both Tyler Thigpen and Tarvaris Jackson as they named their final 53-man roster on Friday, August 31, 2012.
Bills now have four quarterbacks on the roster. It was previously thought that Bills would release Thigpen as they had acquired services of Jackson after releasing Vince Young.
Thigpen had a good day on the field on Thursday, August 30, in the Bills final preseason game against Detroit Lions.
Thigpen will be competing with Jackson for the backup position behind the starter Ryan Fitzpatrick. It was already announced that Brad Smith would take the no.3 spot in the quarterback corps.
Smith is a dynamic player who can also play as a wide receiver. He will be the Bills fifth receiver alongside T.J. Graham, Donald Jones, David Nelson and Stevie Johnson.
Quarterback Thigpen showed good skills as he managed to score a touchdown and covered 186 yards. Bills Head coach Chan Gailey was impressed with his performance and made the decision right to keep the quarterback in case of emergency during the season.
Giving his views about Thigpen on Friday, Gailey said:
“Tyler played good. He did. He made it tough. It was all on the line, so he did a good job.”
Thigpen himself was very happy on finally getting the roster spot. Thigpen said:
“There at first we were kind of shaky a little bit, but we got things going, started clicking with a lot of guys. It was nice to get some extended time and get out there and get in that rhythm.”
Thigpen has played six seasons in the league. He was drafted by Kansas City Chiefs as in the seventh round (217th overall pick) of the 2007 draft. He played three seasons with Chiefs before going to Miami Dolphins. Last season, Thigpen played
three games for Buffalo Bills.
