Buffalo Bills register overtime victory over Arizona Cardinals 19-16 – NFL Recap
Buffalo Bills ended their two-game losing streak with an overtime victory over unlucky Arizona Cardinals, 19-16, in Week 6 game on Sunday, October 14, at University of Phoenix Stadium.
It was second straight defeat for the Cards, who had started off the season 4-0, registering one of the best starts in the franchise history.
Quarterback John Skelton returned to the field for the first time after receiving an injury in the season opener.
Skelton’s injury had allowed Kevin Kolb to take charge of the offence. He started the next five games, including the one against Bills, but an injury sidelined Kolb, allowing the healthy Skelton to return.
Kolb finished 14 of 26 passes for 128 yards while scoring one touchdown and throwing one interception.
Skelton was not very impressive. He completed two of 10 passes for 45 yards and threw one interception.
The offence was once again below par for the Cards, whose reliance on the defence has been increasing with every game.
Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt said after the team:
“If we make more plays early in the game, then we don’t have to live on the edge. The stress of it is pretty tough on everybody.”
Cardinals scored a field goal early in the first quarter to take the lead. A few minutes later, Kolb was sacked in his own end zone, resulting in two safety points for Bills, who scored a touchdown later in the quarter to take the lead.
Cardinals scored a field goal in the second quarter to get one point ahead of Bills, who could not provide any scoring move in the quarter.
The Cards increased their lead in the third quarter by scoring a field goal, but their lead was taken away by Bills when they scored a touchdown.
In the final quarter, Cardinals kicker Jay Feely scored a 61-yard field goal, setting up his personal record, and levelled the score 16-16. No other scoring move was recorded in the quarter and the game was forced to overtime during which Bills managed to
score a field goal and win the game.
Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick finished the game completing 18 of 32 passes for 153 yards.
Bills head coach Chan Gailey said after the game:
“I'm impressed with the way our team fought through adversity. The first play of the game, we fumbled the ball. We played great red zone defence. We didn't play as consistent on offence but did enough good things in all areas to win the game on the road
against a good football team. It wasn't pretty at times, but it was a gut check and that may go a long way for our football team."
Cardinals are going to play their next game against Minnesota Vikings, while Bills will now take on Tennessee Titans.
