Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd hopeful of getting contract extension from the team – NFL News
Buffalo Bills star safety Jairus Byrd is on the way to become one of the hottest free agents in next year’s offseason. However, it looks as if thing as settling down between Bills and Byrd for a contract extension.
Byrd expressed his desire to continue playing for the team in his interview with the team’s website on Friday, November 30, 2012.
Different reports have been flying all over the media that talks between both sides are underway. However, Byrd insisted he had no information about this matter. Byrd said:
“I honestly don’t know. I talked to my agent, but we really haven’t talked about that – it’s kind of been ‘How are you doing?’ or whatever. He just lets me focus (on football). I let him handle that. But he’ll tell me what’s going on.”
The rumours about the talks could be true as Bills might start focusing on their prospects for next season after joining New York Jets for last position in the American Football Conference (AFC) East with a 4-7 record.
The deal will likely take time to get done as Byrd is among the best safeties to become available as a free agent along with Ed Reed of Baltimore Ravens. Byrd is hopeful a deal will be reached between the two sides. Byrd said:
“Sure yeah if everything works out. I have no problems with Buffalo, but I know that around this time it’s about business, so I understand that too. I love the fans here. We just have to win. That’s the biggest thing, just winning and I want to be somewhere
where I’m wanted too.”
Bills general manager Buddy Nix has been looking into ways of getting Byrd for a long-term contract and has shown interest in this since the offseason.
There are only five games left in Byrd’s rookie contract. He was drafted in the second round (42nd overall pick) in the 2009 draft.
Byrd has scored 17 interceptions in his career which is the third best record in the league for this period.
The safety is currently leading the team this season for number of forced fumbles and interceptions.
