Buffalo Bills shred Kansas City Chiefs 35-17 in their opening home fixture – NFL Recap
Buffalo Bills marked a sparkling return of the regular season on their home turf with an emphatic 35-17 victory over Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2 game on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Ralph Wilson Stadium, Buffalo, New York.
The stage was set for Bills running back C.J. Spiller to mark his breakout game and he did what exactly was required. The running back did not look like he was a backup as he manoeuvred the game with his strong running game.
Spiller started the game in absence of starter Fred Jackson who got injured last week and will likely remain out for the next three weeks.
His two touchdowns early in the first half of the game gave the stepping stone for Bills to build up a strong offensive performance that led them to score 35 points. Spiller covered 123 yards during the game
Bills looked a completely different side during this game as compared to their woeful play against New York Jets which led them to a 48-28 loss in the season opener.
Offensively, Bills had an outstanding game, getting five touchdowns in the third quarter. The offence was supported by an even better play from the defence as well as special teams.
Mario Williams also showed some signs of greatness for the first time in Bills’ jersey as he recovered a fumble from Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel.
Also, Kyle Williams was at his best, getting two sacks during the game to put create more problems for the Chiefs offence. Bills now stand 1-1 this season. Bills Head Coach Chan Gailey said:
“The special teams made big plays, the defence made some big plays. We got five sacks. Things like that, three turnovers and five sacks you’ll win a bunch of football games you keep doing that. And we can run the football we’ve got a chance to be a pretty
good football team before it’s over with.”
Bills scored their first points towards the end of the first quarter with a 17-yard run by Spiller to reach the end zone. The first quarter ended at 7-0.
In the second quarter, Spiller scored again with a five-yard run for a touchdown.
Then quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick got into action with a 10-yard throw to tight end Scott Chandler to go into halftime with a 21-0 lead.
Kicker Ryan Succop opened the scoring chart for Chiefs with 33-yard field goal. Bills extended their lead with wide receiver Stevie Johnson catching a 49-yard pass to get another touchdown.
Cornerback Leodis McKelvin then returned a punt for 88 yards to get into the end zone as Bills ended the third quarter 35-3.
Although Chiefs managed to score two touchdowns in the final quarter, it was not enough to compensate the failure of the first three quarter. The game finished 35-17.
Chiefs again looked lacklustre as their defence gave way to many openings for Bills offence to proceed, giving away 21 points in the first half of the game.
Their offence looked completely hopeless during their first six possessions and ended up with many fumbles. Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe scored the only two touchdowns by the Chiefs.
The defence never got going even with the return of their top players like cornerback Brandon Flowers and linebacker Tamba Hali. According to the Associated Press, Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel said:
"I thought that we would be better, and we're not, so we have to try and figure out what that is. From what I've seen, if we do what we're supposed to do, then we would be better."
