Buffalo Bills still without a win after Ryan Succop's overtime field goal
The Buffalo Bills remain the only team in the NFL without a win after Kansas City Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop kicked a 35-yard field goal in overtime to give Kansas City the 13-10 win on Sunday, 31 October.
How it happened
After a scoreless first quarter, Kansas City got the only scoring of the first half when receiver Dwayne Bowe caught a ond-yard pass from Matt Cassel capping off a six-play, 71-yard drive.
With their first possession of the second half, the Bills traveled 56 yards over 15 plays to get kicker Rian Lindell into field goal range to kick a 43-yarder. But the Chiefs answered back when Succop
kicked a field goal from 28 yards out early in the fourth.
The Bills tied the game with just over two minutes to go when Ryan Fitzpatrick hit Steve Johnson with a four-yard pass after leading the team 83 yards on 15 plays.
In overtime, both teams had chances to win it with each kicker missing one field goal attempt. Lindell even hit his first attempt from 53 yards, but Chiefs head coach Todd Haley called a timeout just before
the snap. Lindell's kick hit the upright on the second attempt. The game looked to be headed for a tie before Ryan Succop kicked a 35-yarder with no time left on the clock to win it for the Chiefs.
What they're saying
Both kickers commented on their respective overtime field goal attempts after the game.
"It's kind of a goofy deal, but it is what it is," Lindell said about his wobbler that hit the upright and went wide. "I just wanted to hit a good ball. I didn't really, and then they said time out and
I tried it again. I just got way too much turf on it. I wasn't hitting a very good ball all day and that was a good example of that."
"I hit (the first one) really well, as crazy as that sounds," Succop said about his first overtime attempt that missed. "I guess I learned something from the first one and realized I'm going to have to
put this ball outside the post because there was that much wind today. I feel very blessed to have the second opportunity."
What it all means
The win for the Chiefs was an important one with both the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders collecting wins on Sunday. They improve their record to 5-2 and stay tops in the AFC West. They play
the Raiders, in Oakland, next Sunday.
The Bills remain in the NFL's basement, and are now 0-7. They host the Chicago Bears next Sunday.
