Buffalo Bills wide receiver David Nelson to miss the entire season due to knee injury – NFL
Buffalo Bills continue to experience unfavourable developments at the start of the new season as they are hit with another setback in form of injury to wide receiver David Nelson, who will be out for the entire season after injuring his knee in Week 1 game against New York Jets.
Bills head coach Chan Gailey confirmed the reports during a news conference on Monday, September 10, 2012. He said:
“It was a bad knee injury, It’s a setback and we’ve got to get some other people up and going that’s just part of it.”
Gailey did not specify the details of the injury. However, it is reported that Nelson tore his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) during Sunday’s season opener, which the Bills lost 48-28.
Nelson went down on the field during the final quarter of the game. He was then carried off the field. Before getting injured, he caught two passes and gained 31 yards.
Reports started to pop up late Sunday night that Nelson’s injury was quite severe and he would be out for many months.
It is disappointing news for Nelson, who was assigned to play a backup role behind starting wide receivers Stevie Johnson and Donald Jones. Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said of Nelson’s injury:
“That’s a really tough loss for us. Something like that just kills me. I lose sleep over something like that. He’s such a great guy and worked so hard to get to where he is right now. He was primed to have a big year. Our chemistry was great. We were really on the same page with a lot of stuff we were doing. That’s something you never want to see.”
With loss of Nelson, Bills have a very thin wide receiving corps. This means that rookie receiver T.J. Graham is the only legitimate receiver on the roster who will back up the starters.
Quarterback Brad Smith could get an increased role at the wide receiving position in absence of Nelson.
Nelson played a major role in Bills offence last season as he played in all 16 games while starting 13 of them. He completed 61 passes and covered 658 passing yards. He also scored five touchdowns.
