Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality extends sponsorship deal with Africa Open to next five year - Golf News
The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has announced to extend its sponsorship deal with the Africa Open to the next five years after the three-year contract ended this year.
The inaugural event of the Africa Open was hosted by the Fish River Sun Country Club in 2008.
However, after Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality became the major sponsor for the tournament, it was moved to the East London Golf Club in the Buffalo City Metro Municipality, Eastern Cape, South Africa.
It joined the European Tour schedule in 2010, after being co-sanctioned by the European and Sunshine Tours.
Major champions Retief Goosen and Louis Oosthuizen have welcomed the news of the event to be held at the East London in future.
“The dedication from Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality since they joined as sponsors in 2009 has been commendable,” said Africa Open champion Oosthuizen.
“Their support has gone a long way in ensuring the successful growth of the Africa Open. It’s wonderful news for all of us that have grown to love this tournament that we will be coming to the Africa Open’s home for the next five years”.
Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality’s councillor, Pumla Nazo, said that the sponsorship deal of one million Euros will ensure that the world class golf players will continue to come to the city for the next five years.
Moreover, they will also enjoy the economic benefits offered by the tournament and the local people will have a top class event to watch every year.
“The decision to associate ourselves with the Africa Open has paid lucrative socio-economic dividends for Buffalo City and its people,” Nazo said.
He went on to say that more than 300 jobs are created each year, before and after the tournament is held in the area.
Moreover, the tourism industry is also experiencing a boom because of the success of the tournament, which in turn will benefit the local retailers and the arte facts’ manufacturers in the region.
He also said that when the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality started supporting the event in 2009, it did not have the idea that it would create so many opportunities and long-lasting legacy for the city.
Now, after a huge success of the tournament, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality’s officials made a decision that the entity should continue supporting the event to be held at the East London GC so that people associated with it can benefit.
The decision of contract extension has cheered up persons directly associated with this event. The event has now become an icon for the city.
