Buffalo Sabres continue winning streak, slam Toronto Maple Leafs with 2-1 win -NHL Preseason Update
Buffalo Sabres are proving that they really are a transformed team as they won their third straight 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) preseason matchup by beating Toronto Maple Leafs quite easily, 2-1, Friday night at the sold-out Air Canada Centre in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada.
Corey Tropp scored the matches first goal on an assist from Matt Ellis for his first of the preseason at the 7:15 mark during the first period. Toronto’s Colton Orr and Cody Franson went out at different point, giving Buffalo the added man advantage but
Maple Leafs managed to kill them off.
Phil Kessel made his presence known by firing off a second period shot to level up the match with his first also on a pass from John-Michael Liles.
Christian Ehrhoff found Jason Pominville open a little over midway through the final period and allowed him to score his second of the preseason contest, taking advantage of the third penalty awarded to Toronto.
Buffalo Sabres goalie, Ryan Miller, who is also the former 2010 winner of the Vezina Trophy, showed a spectacular performance throughout the game by blocking 33 of 34 shots taken on his net and playing the whole time.
"I thought Ryan made a couple of really, really big ones in the second period, he made a couple of spectacular ones too, he held us in there when we weren’t really playing very well", Sabres coach, Lindy Ruff, said.
Even Toronto had a hard time not saying anything in favour or Miller, which certainly showed true sportsman spirit from the Canadian side.
"Miller made some big saves for them. He's a good goaltender, you've got to get traffic in front of him and get him moving and he made some key saves," Leafs defenseman John-Michael Liles said.
It will be exciting to see if Buffalo Sabres can continue their hot headed winning streak with four matchups remaining until the 2011-2012 NHL regular season begins. Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs are scheduled to meet again on Saturday, September
24, but this time at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York.
