Patrick Lalime, a 37-year-old veteran goalie of the National Hockey Leagues’ (NHL) Buffalo Sabres franchise, announced his retirement on Wednesday, July 20, from professional hockey, following an announcement on his plans to join Reseau des Sports (RDS),
which is a French-language sports network.
According to Lalime, he will be joining the broadcasting staff of RDS as a sports analyst for Ottawa Senators, a team which he spent most of his professional playing career from 1999-2004.
Lalime was proud of his achievement that he made throughout a span of 12 NHL seasons with teams like Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators, St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks and finally ending with Buffalo Sabres.
“I totally enjoyed working here, and playing with the guys I played with. Everywhere I’ve been, it’s been a good experience. All the teammates, the coaching ... made a lot of friends. It’s been a very fun part of my life. You do the thing you love, which
was playing hockey, and I had the privilege to play in the NHL, and play for a long time. I’m very proud of that. It’s time to move on now”, Lalime said.
Lamile was drafted as the 156th overall pick during round-six of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by Pittsburgh Penguins, the St. Bonaventure, Quebec, Canada native played in 39 games in a single season with his original draft team until joining Ottawa.
Throughout his professional career, Lalime has participated in a total of 444 major league matchups and ended his career with a saves percentage of .905 and 2.58 goals against average.
“It feels weird, let’s put it that way”, Lalime said of hanging up the pads. “But I think I’m at that stage in my life. I’m ready for the next chapter”.
Without a doubt, Lalime is considered to be one of Ottawa’s best goalies in the teams’ history. His performance that almost led them to the Stanley Cup during the 2003 NHL Eastern Conference Finals in which they faced defeat in a close game-seven series
to New Jersey Devils.
It will be interesting to see whether Patrick Lalime will be as good at analysing the game as he was playing it.
